According to Punch , Otitoloju was
arrested for allegedly brutalising Adeola
after a neigbhour and the landlady accused
the child of stealing from their apartments.
As punishment, the upset aunt tortured
Adeola with a razor blade, giving her
brutal cuts.
The child was rushed to the nearest general
hospital by a kind neighbour. At first, the
hospital refused to give the child treatment
until a police report was gotten. And so,
the situation was reported to a worker of
the Ikorodu Child Protection Network who
subsequently, alerted the police.
Eventually, Adeola was taken into
government’s custody and given emergency
treatment at the hospital, while the police
arrested the abusive aunt.
Yesterday, Otitoloju was arraigned on two
counts bordering on child abuse.
According to Punch, here’s the charges
read out to her:
“That you, Funmi Otitoloju, on June 9,
at about 6.30am on Sambi Street, Off
Macaulay area, off Baiyeku Road, in
the Ikorodu Magisterial District, did
assault one Adeola, 12 years old, with
a razor blade on her right hand and
neck, causing her bodily harm, and
thereby committing an offence
contrary to and punishable under
Section 171 of the Criminal Law of
Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
“That you, Funmi Otitoloju, on the
same date, time and place in the
aforementioned magisterial district,
did unlawfully and indecently deal
with a child, thereby committing an
offence punishable under Section 135
of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of
Nigeria, 2011.”
Otitoloju pleaded guilty to the charges and
the Magistrate, Mrs. A.A. Oshoniyi,
sentenced her to four years’ imprisonment
with no option of fine.
